My babushka was born in Slovakia, in the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, where her parents were engaged in the food trade. A dashing Hungarian hussar swept her off her feet with his Sachertorte, and he became my dedushka. They were stationed in Romania, but after several years of living and cooking there, she ran away with a handsome Polish lancer and his bigos. After he was cashiered, they settled in Serbia, where the family history is a trifle vague, but there are stories of special soups and Gypsy caravans. By no means am I implying that my granda was a whore, simply she was a culinary opportunist and explorer, and far ahead of her time in trying to stitch up the Balkans. Thank God she did not end up in Detroit.
